RE: Laminate wood flooring

We did our '87 Newell MH and used it for two years before selling the MH. It was much better than carpet. When we camped and it rained the leaves and twigs we would track in were an easy clean up. If you spill any liquid on the floor, clean it up pretty quickly or the edges of the flooring will swell slightly and remain that way. I would like to do it on our 5ver but the four slides make it impractical I think.

RE: 55 Gallon Water Drum

Try a chemical company in the Metroplex. Harcros comes to mind. Tell them you want to purchase a used sodium hypochlorite (bleach) drum. Rinse it out with water and you are good to go. Should cost no more than $20. It is the same as Chlorox bleach only a bit stronger. A good rinse will make it fine for drinking water.

RE: wishful thinking

To get a quick list of manufacturers just go to Ebay. Search for 5th wheels and they provide a list of 5th wheels by manufacturer. Won't be all of them but it would be a decent list to start with and then you can do a Google search by manufacturer. You can also look under RV sales on this site (home page, top right), select RV type as fifth wheel then click on "make". It is a pretty long list.

RE: What kind of drill for emergency slide operation ?

Lot's of cord drills available with a 90 degree head. They are called right angle drills. Milwaukee makes three 7 amp drills according to their website. That should give you plenty of power to do what you want to do. I am like you with the battery never being charged when I really need it. www.milwaukeetool.com will show you the Milwaukee offerings but there should be many, many more.

RE: Aux. fuel tank

I would like to second or third the previous posts about it is just about convenience. We make a list of the rest stops before we leave with the mile markers noted and plan our stops when we travel the Interstates. We stop every couple of hours for our comfort and the comfort of our Yorkie. We traveled through a pretty lonely part of New Mexico one trip and I put the aux tank in upon returning home. It was like listening to a ticking time bomb wondering if we would find a diesel stop that we could get our 37' 5ver into to get some diesel. The whole idea of RV'ing is to NOT worry about things. Now we don't.

RE: Got a TT in my sights. Need opinions

I pulled a Jayco Jay Feather that was 31' and weighed right at 7500# loaded with my Suburban that had the same engine and transmission. I had an equalizer or weight distributing hitch and it pulled fine. Your Tahoe is a little shorter wheelbase so you want to make sure you get a hitch with a good sway control system.

RE: TV oil change while on the road

I pick up a case of Mopar oil and filter and keep it until I need a change. Then I go to any quick change place and watch them put in the oil and install the filter from the closest vantage point they will allow me. Another poster recommended going to Turbo Diesel Register and gave a link (you might want to join as I did). They have a really good article on comparisons of oils and filters for your Dodge. You should read it. That is the reason I use only Mopar.

RE: Diesel fuel stops

I do my best to not use the truck lanes. I like the fast pumping but too many times there is diesel all over the ground and you track it into your tv or 5ver. It seems that most RV or auto islands are not as likely to have the spilled diesel everywhere. My other comment is that on our last trip the auto pumps were a few cents cheaper because they did not charge more for credit card purchases the truck pumps did. It may always be that way but I hadn't noticed before.

RE: Trailer pickup failed on first attempt - things missing

I had the grill which came with our travel trailer we had and after setting it up the first time decided we could cook inside till we could get a proper grill. As previous poster mentioned you cannot cook below canopy, must be careful about the exterior of your trailer, and mine was not what I would call a quality grill. I gave mine away on this forum and bought the Weber BabyQ. It was a final solution for us. As for the dealer I would ask a professional to examine the installation of the hitch before I completed payment for your RV. You also need to note on your contracts that the hitch was not installed per factory instructions and that the dealer assumes liability. I think you will need to pick out another unit before the dealer will agree to be responsible for his poor installation.

RE: This morning in Elkhart, Indiana

My wife and I have been serious about RV's since 2002 and dabbled before that when we didn't have the time or money to really go places in a good RV. It takes about a week after we get home before I start getting excited about the next trip. The excitement and anticipation just keep building until we finally pull out of the driveway. The driving, setting up, camping, meeting new people, going to new places is all just fantastic. I don't think it will ever fail to excite us. You will really enjoy your new dream. This message from WD5JOJ(many, many years ago).

RE: Gas mileage with your rig alone, and with your fiver?

Around 10.5 towing with no headwind and level Interstate highway. Strong headwind and hills knocks it down to about 8.5 towing. Without trailer getting about 20 at 65 mph after Dodge put new "flash" on my ECM. Was getting 18 before new programming on ECM.

RE: Aux. fuel tank

I bought the 51 gallon from Northern Tool. It gravity feeds into the filler neck of my OEM tank and has an automatic ball valve which closes when the OEM tank is full. We have the capability to go 800 plus miles towing without worrying about fuel. Also can go 1500+ miles without 5ver before refill. It is absolutely great. You can wait till you find the truck stop you really like to fuel at rather than having to stop out of fear of not finding anything down the road. Also helps when you see a diesel price that is a nickel a gallon less. I live in Texas and operate a few diesel trucks. Never had algae in any fuel in any truck. Have a "yard truck" that sits for months without being refueled. You might want to read this link in Wikipedia. Scroll down to Algae, microbes, and water. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel I think you will really love your aux tank. I wouldn't take for mine.

RE: Brake Controllers?

I like my Prodigy. I have never had a problem. I replaced my original controller that I was unhappy with and went with a Prodigy.

RE: electric waste valves

I mounted three on my Jayco 341RLQS. Two gray water and one black water. They are great. Never had anyone operate a switch while camping other than myself. You have to be careful to only hold the button down to open and close for a couple of seconds according to the manufacturer. Mine have a red LED to indicate they are open. Switches are located on side of trailer where you can watch your hose when you open the valves. I would be too scared that my hose might roll out or jump out when I opened my black tank and then have that mess to clean up.

RE: When did 102 wide become standard?

My '87 Newell MC was 102". Watch out for narrow toll booths. I about lost a mirror in Oklahoma.

RE: Everything about Dodge Trucks with the new Cummins 6.7

I bought my 6.7 one year ago. Bought Dodge because Duramax kept giving injector problems. I now have about 22,000 miles on mine. Mileage was not good when new but keeps getting better. I got a new ECM under warranty about a month ago (check engine light would not go out) and it took me from 17.5 to 19.5 empty and driving 70-73 mph. Just got back from our first trip since the new ECM was installed and got 8.9 driving into a 30 mph headwind and 10.8 on return trip without headwind. We traveled into the New Mexico mountains up to 6800 feet and it pulled like it was on flat ground. We pretty much love everything about it. The six speed transmission is as smooth as silk, the exhaust brake is wonderful when coming down steep grades, and it pulls like no other truck I have ever had. I would absolutely encourage that no additives be added to the fuel. With the new emissions system I think that would be a big mistake. I don't want to do anything to endanger the 100,000 engine warranty so unless it is approved by Chrysler Corp I would leave them alone. Hope you enjoy your new truck as much as we have.

RE: Fun in Nashville

As JTHarley says KOA is the place to stay. However you need to specify that you want the paved sites with concrete patios. They also have gravel sites with lots of trees and no patios. Just tell them what you are wanting when you call. We always stay on the deluxe sites because of our size with the slides out. I would also recommend that you try P.F. Chang's Restaurant while you are there. If you have not been to one you will be amazed at the good food. Another place at the opposite end of the restaurant spectrum would be Prince's Hot Chicken Shack. You can check out both of these on the web so you will know what to expect. Lot's of good places to go and things to do. We go there at least twice a year for 10 days or so.

RE: Converting from Class A to 5th Wheel - need advice

We gave up our 40' Newell MH about 3 years ago because of the maintenance costs and 3-4 mpg. We went to a TT but realized that was just not big enough. Last year we purchased a Jayco 341RLQS (37' length) which has four slides and it is the final solution. We get 10-11 mpg with out 2007.5 Dodge 2500 Cummins 6.7 diesel and much more room than the MH. Maintenance is almost non existant and the purchase price was a fraction of the MH price. We still have a year left of warranty but doesn't appear we will need it.

RE: Where can I look to find an RV to refurbish?

There are a lot of repossessed vehicles sold by banks who finance rv's. Bank of the West would be a good one to check. Give them your location and see if they don't have a couple close. Normally they are in pretty fair shape. They are mostly in need of minor repairs and a WHOLE lot of cleaning. They might even be willing to finance the unit again for your brother.

RE: msrp and real price

Ditto on the 25% to 30%. I bought mine for about 21% off and they put another 6% to 8% more in overallowance on my trade. In other words I got between 27% and 29% off. I thought I got a very good deal. That was their offer and I did not counter offer. They have been an amazingly good dealer with my previous units and with the one I bought. I want them to make enough to be able to stay around and take care of me.
